An Air India plane crashed a few minutes after takeoff in Ahmedabad. The pilot of the Air India plane had given a ‘Mayday’ call to the Ahmedabad Air Traffic Control (ATC). However, there was no response from the plane to the calls made by ATC after this. This information has been given by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
There were 242 passengers on board the plane.
At around 2 pm, this Air India plane bound for London crashed just moments after taking off from Ahmedabad airport. There are grave concerns about the lives of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the plane.
According to the DGCA, the aircraft was commanded by Captain Sumit Sabharwal, who had 8200 hours of flying experience and was an LTC (Line Training Captain). He was accompanied by First Officer Clive Kunder as co-pilot. He had 1100 hours of experience.

The plane gave a ‘Mayday’ call immediately after takeoff.
According to ATC, the plane took off from runway 23 of Ahmedabad airport at 1:39 pm Indian time (UTC 08:09). Immediately after takeoff, the plane gave a ‘Mayday’ call, but after that, none of the calls made by ATC were answered by the plane. DGCA said that the plane crashed to the ground outside the airport boundary immediately after takeoff from runway 23. Heavy clouds of black smoke were seen rising from the spot. The Boeing plane was seen losing altitude rapidly and it crashed in the Meghnanigar area.
The DGCA statement said, On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI-171 (aircraft number VT-ANB), which was going from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff. There were a total of 242 people on board the plane, including 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew members.
