New Delhi – In a significant political development, Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has tendered his resignation with immediate effect, citing health concerns. In a letter dated July 21, 2025, addressed to the President of India, Mr. Dhankhar stated that he was stepping down on medical advice in order to prioritize his health. The resignation has been submitted under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.

Background of the Resignation

Jagdeep Dhankhar took office as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022. As Vice President, he also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation brings an early end to his tenure, which was communicated to the President through a formal letter.

Constitutional Basis

In his letter, Mr. Dhankhar wrote:

“In accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India, I hereby resign from the office of the Vice President of India with immediate effect, in order to prioritize my health and adhere to medical advice.”

Article 67(a) of the Constitution allows the Vice President to resign by submitting a written letter addressed to the President. No formal acceptance is required for such resignation to take effect.

Constitutional Process

While not a judicial matter, the resignation strictly follows constitutional protocol. Article 67(a) allows for a unilateral resignation, effective immediately upon the President receiving the letter.

Further, Article 68(2) of the Constitution mandates that a vacancy in the office of the Vice President due to death, resignation, or removal must be filled through an election as soon as possible.

Expression of Gratitude in the Resignation Letter

In his letter, Mr. Dhankhar expressed heartfelt gratitude to various dignitaries and colleagues he worked with during his tenure:

To the President, he wrote:

“I extend my deepest gratitude to the Hon’ble President of India for her warm cooperation and harmonious working relationship.”

Acknowledging the Prime Minister and Cabinet, he said:

“I thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers for their invaluable support. I have learned a great deal during my time in office.”

To the Members of Parliament, he shared:

“The affection, trust, and camaraderie extended to me by the Hon’ble Members of Parliament will always remain etched in my memory.”

Reflecting on his tenure, he noted:

“It has been my privilege to witness and be part of India’s remarkable economic growth and progress during this transformational phase. Serving the nation during such a historic period has been the greatest honor of my life.”

He concluded the letter with a note of optimism:
